Train to Busan (2016) Movie Info :

Train to Busan (Korean: 부산행; Hanja: 釜山行; RR: Busanhaeng) is a 2016 South Korean action horror film[5] directed by Yeon Sang-ho and starring Gong Yoo, Jung Yu-mi, and Ma Dong-seok.[6] The film mostly takes place on a train to Busan as a zombie apocalypse suddenly breaks out in the country and threatens the safety of the passengers.

Train to Busan (2016) StoryLine :

Fund manager Seok-woo is a cynical workaholic and divorced father of his daughter Su-an, who wants to spend her birthday with her mother in Busan. Seok-woo sees a video of Su-an attempting to sing “Aloha ʻOe” at her singing recital, but she succumbs to stage fright, because of his absence. Overcome with guilt, he decides to indulge Su-Ann’s wish to go to Busan for her birthday. The next day, they board the KTX 101 at Seoul Station, en route to Busan. Other passengers include Sang-hwa and his pregnant wife Seong-kyeong, COO Yon-suk, a high school baseball team including Yong-guk and his cheerleader girlfriend Jin-hee, elderly sisters In-gil and Jong-gil, and a traumatized homeless stowaway hiding in the bathroom. As the train departs, an ill young woman runs onto the train unnoticed. She turns into a zombie and attacks a train attendant, who also turns. The infection spreads rapidly throughout the train.
Critic’s Rating: 4/5

Story: Seok Woo (Yoo Gong) tries to balance his demanding job while dealing with his young daughter Soo-an (Soo-an Kim), who prefers to be with Woo’s estranged wife instead. Giving in to a request for her birthday, the duo head out to meet Soo-an’s mother in Busan. But a stray passenger manages to stumble aboard, spreading chaos and mayhem as a rabid virus turns the helpless commuters into zombies, leaving Seok Woo and Soo-an to fend for their lives.

Review: Modern zombie movies are usually associated with mindless gore, bucket loads of CGI and tedious scare tactics that can be spotted a mile away by the average horror fan. Rarely would one expect to find themselves immersed in a gripping tale of human relationships and a character study on how people react to dire circumstances.

Cobweb (2023)

 Cobweb (2023) Movie Review

IMDb Rating: ★★★★☆ (5.9/10)

Stars: Lizzy Caplan, Antony Starr, Cleopatra Coleman

Genres: Horror, Mystery, Thriller

Director: Samuel Bodin

Writer: Chris Thomas Devlin

Overview

Samuel Bodin’s Cobweb (2023) is a psychological horror thriller that plays with childhood fears, paranoia, and the unsettling feeling of something lurking in the dark. The movie takes a slow-burn approach, focusing more on atmospheric tension rather than outright jump scares, making it feel like a blend of Hereditary and The Babadook, but with its own eerie identity.

Plot Summary "Spoiler-Free"

The story follows an introverted young boy, Peter "Woody Norman", who begins hearing strange noises coming from inside the walls of his home. His overbearing parents, played by Lizzy Caplan and Antony Starr, dismiss his fears, insisting that he’s imagining things. However, as Peter starts to uncover dark secrets hidden within his house, he begins to question whether his parents are telling him the truth—or if they’re hiding something far more sinister.

What Works?

Atmosphere & Cinematography:
The film does an excellent job of creating an unsettling mood. The dimly lit interiors, eerie sound design, and slow camera movements contribute to a claustrophobic feeling, making the audience feel trapped in Peter’s world of paranoia.

Antony Starr & Lizzy Caplan’s Performances:
Starr "The Boys" and Caplan "Cloverfield, Castle Rock" deliver chilling performances as Peter’s strange and emotionally distant parents. Their unsettling demeanor adds an extra layer of mystery to the story are they protecting Peter, or are they the real monsters?

Suspenseful Build-Up:
The script smartly plays with psychological horror elements, keeping viewers engaged with its “Is it real or is it all in his head?” approach. The slow revelation of the mystery is handled well, keeping the tension high.

A Creepy, Fairytale-Like Narrative:
The movie has a gothic fairy tale quality, reminiscent of Hansel & Gretel or Coraline. The house itself feels like a character, filled with secrets, whispers, and hidden horrors.

What Falls Short?

Pacing Issues:
While the slow-burn approach works for tension-building, some viewers might find the first half too drawn out. The real action and horror elements only kick in later, which could test the patience of those expecting a more fast-paced horror experience.

Predictability & Some Unanswered Questions:
While the mystery is intriguing, horror fans may find some twists predictable. The film hints at deeper psychological and supernatural elements but doesn’t fully explore them, leaving some threads unresolved.

Underdeveloped Side Characters:
Cleopatra Coleman, who plays Peter’s sympathetic teacher, could have been given more depth. Her character adds an interesting perspective, but she feels underused.

Final Verdict: Is Cobweb Worth Watching?

If you enjoy slow-burn psychological horror with a fairytale-like creepiness, Cobweb is worth a watch. It’s not a jump-scare-heavy horror flick but rather an unsettling, eerie mystery that lingers in your mind. Antony Starr and Lizzy Caplan deliver excellent performances, and the film’s atmosphere is genuinely haunting.

Wolf Man (2025)

 Wolf Man 2025 Movie Review

"Wolf Man" 2025, directed by Leigh Whannell, is a contemporary reimagining of the classic Universal Monster tale. The film centers on Blake Lovell "Christopher Abbott", who relocates his family to rural Oregon after inheriting his estranged father's property. There, an encounter with a mysterious creature leads Blake into a harrowing transformation, jeopardizing his wife Charlotte "Julia Garner" and daughter Ginger "Matilda Firth".

Visuals and Atmosphere

The film's cinematography captures the dense, foreboding Oregon wilderness, effectively setting a tense and immersive atmosphere. Whannell employs a somber tone, diverging from his previous work on "The Invisible Man," to explore themes of inherited trauma and primal fear. Notably, the film omits traditional werewolf lore elements, such as full moons and silver bullets, opting for a more grounded approach to the creature's mythos.

Performances

Christopher Abbott delivers a compelling performance as Blake, portraying a man grappling with internal and external monstrosities. Julia Garner embodies Charlotte with resilience, though some critiques suggest her role is underdeveloped, reducing her to a damsel in distress. Matilda Firth, as Ginger, captures the innocence and confusion of a child witnessing her father's unsettling metamorphosis.

Critical Reception

"Wolf Man" has elicited mixed reactions from critics and audiences alike. Some praise the film's atmospheric tension and fresh take on the werewolf genre. For instance, No But Listen describes it as "an unsettling, compelling, and downright entertaining werewolf flick that's a worthy entry into the Universal Monsters canon." Conversely, others criticize the film for its pacing issues and lack of genuine horror elements. The Australian refers to it as a "howler of a remake" that "lacks bite," highlighting shortcomings in script and execution. Additionally, Time magazine notes that the film "tries and fails to add something new to the original," pointing out its struggle with cohesive messaging.

Conclusion

"Wolf Man" 2025 offers a modern perspective on the classic werewolf narrative, delving into themes of familial bonds and internal demons. While the film excels in creating a moody and immersive environment, it falters in delivering consistent pacing and fully realizing its horror potential. Viewers seeking a fresh take on the genre may find it intriguing, but those expecting traditional scares might be left wanting.
